Accomplished trial attorney Jeffrey Kroll of Kaveny + Kroll Trial Attorneys shares how he secured one of the largest premises liability compensatory awards in the nation and the largest verdict ever reported against the city of Chicago on behalf of college dance student Tierney Darden. In 2015, Tierney suffered life-altering injuries at O’Hare International Airport after a poorly maintained pedestrian shelter weighing 750 pounds fell on top of her, shattering her spinal cord. Today, Tierney is paralyzed from the waist down and suffers from severe neuropathic pain on a daily basis. A post-verdict settlement of $115 million was reached with the city of Chicago.

Jeffrey J. Kroll focuses primarily on plaintiffs’ litigation.  Jeff has been representing victims of negligence for almost three decades and has taken cases to verdict throughout the country in the areas of trucking accidents, products liability, medical malpractice and transportation negligence.  

In 2017, Jeff was part of the trial team that won a record-breaking $148 million verdict on behalf of a dancer paralyzed by a collapsed shelter at O’Hare International Airport.  This is the highest compensatory damage award to an individual plaintiff in Illinois, and in the top five nationally, in a personal injury case excluding punitive damages. It is also believed to be one the largest premises liability compensatory awards nationally that does not involve a toxic tort claim.  

Jeff regularly handles complex damage cases and often receives multimillion dollar verdicts and settlements. In 2015, Jeff obtained a $15.2 million verdict on behalf of a man who was seriously injured when he was struck and run over by a forklift at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago.  During his career, he has obtained verdicts or negotiated settlements on over 75 occasions where the results have exceeded $1 million, including six cases which have exceeded $10 million. Jeff has obtained more than $325 million in verdicts and settlements throughout his career.

Jeff has been selected by Best Lawyers as one of the Top Personal Injury Lawyers in Illinois for the last seven years.  He has been selected by the American Trial Lawyers Association as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Illinois and has been selected by his peers as a Leading Attorney and Super Lawyer in Illinois every year since 2005.
